Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts and Thingamajig Theater recently had their Open Rehearsal for Friends of the Theater. Attendees were able to see a LIVE rehearsal of the upcoming West Side Story, opening weekend June 22 – 23rd. “Dance at the Gym” is an iconic scene where Maria and Tony establish their Romeo and Juliet-esque relationship that steers the rest of the play.
Zulfiya Asquino plays the lead role, Maria, who’s character falls in love with Tony, played by Nick Drias, a previous member of her brothers rival gang, at a local dance.
“They see someone completely different than themselves and still fall in love. It was an important message then and still is now.” Zulfiya says.
Zulfiya has worked on plays in Fort Collins and is excited to be a part of the PSCA and Thingamajig Theater. As well as being in West Side Story she also appears in Legally Blonde and Thoroughly Modern Millie this summer.
“I graduated a year ago and had worked in Fort Collins on Ragtime and Fun Home at the Midtown Arts Center. This is my first play here. It’s exciting!”

The actors in the summer shows hail from all over the world and some even from Pagosa Springs. Having the support from the community enables these performers to entertain us with their talent and wonderful showmanship throughout the season. “The Friends of Thingamajig have been instrumental in ensuring that the Artists’ House – residence to our actors and crew – is a welcoming and comfortable place to live.” (pagosacenter.org)
Donating to the arts, volunteering, and attending shows are great ways to continue having top performances showcased here in Pagosa Springs.
